15-5 PH (UNS S15500) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel containing 14-15.5% chromium, 3.5-5.5% nickel, and 2.5-4.5% copper, with a niobium addition. It is aged at temperatures from 900°F (H900) to 1150°F (H1150) to develop mechanical properties, similar to 17-4 PH but with improved through-thickness toughness in thick sections due to vacuum arc remelting (VAR) production.

15-5 PH and 17-4 PH have similar nominal compositions, but 15-5 PH is produced by VAR or ESR remelting, which refines the microstructure and significantly improves through-thickness toughness and transverse properties. This makes 15-5 PH the preferred choice for thick plate applications such as aircraft bulkheads where 17-4 PH can show directional property differences.

15-5 PH plate offers very high strength (H900: 190 ksi tensile, 170 ksi yield), excellent toughness in thick sections versus 17-4 PH, good corrosion resistance comparable to 304 in mild environments, good machinability in Condition A, and a range of strength-toughness combinations via aging conditions.

15-5 PH plate is used in aerospace bulkheads, wing fittings, and structural frames; nuclear reactor components; chemical processing vessels; food processing machinery; and petrochemical valve and pump bodies -- wherever very high strength, good toughness, and adequate corrosion resistance are all required simultaneously.

H900 condition: approximately 190 ksi tensile, 170 ksi yield, 35-45 HRC. H1025: ~155 ksi tensile, ~145 ksi yield. H1075: ~145 ksi tensile. H1150: ~125 ksi tensile. Each step-up in aging temperature reduces strength and hardness while improving ductility and toughness.

Yes, 15-5 PH machines well, especially in Condition A (solution-annealed, softest state). After aging to H900-H1025, carbide tooling handles it well. Parts are typically rough-machined in Condition A, then finish-machined after aging.
