310 StainlessMachinability – Heat uniformly at 1742 – 2192°F (950 – 1200°C). After hot forming, a final anneal at 1832 – 2101°F (1000 – 1150°C), we recommend rapid quenching. The alloy is quite ductile and forms in a manner very similar to 316. We do not recommend cold forming of pieces with long-term exposure to high temperatures. This is because the the alloy is subject to carbide precipitation and sigma phase precipitants.

Corrosion Resistance – 310 stainless steel boasts exceptional resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to 2000°F under mild cyclic conditions. Its high chromium and medium nickel content provide good resistance to sulfidation and hot corrosion. This makes 310 ideal for use in moderately carburizing atmospheres commonly found in petrochemical environments.

Composition – Chromium and Nickel dominate this stainless steel, which results in exceptional corrosion resistance and good sulfidation resistance. Although other metals make up about 50% of the composition, Iron remains the majority component for balance.

Yes, Grade 310 is an excellent choice for high-temperature applications. With 24-26% chromium and 19-22% nickel, it provides outstanding oxidation resistance up to approximately 2100 F (1150 C) in continuous service -- making it one of the best standard austenitic grades for furnace components, heat exchangers, and high-temperature structural parts.

The highest-quality austenitic grades in terms of corrosion resistance are super-austenitic alloys like 904L and 254 SMO. For high-temperature service, 310 and Incoloy 800HT are top performers. For overall strength and corrosion balance, duplex 2205 is considered premium.

The main disadvantages of 316 are higher cost vs. 304, susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking at elevated temperatures in very high chloride concentrations, and no significant high-temperature advantage over 304 or 310. For high-temperature applications, 310 is the correct grade -- not 316.

The four main types of stainless steel are austenitic (304, 316, 310), ferritic (430, 409), martensitic (410, 416, 440C), and precipitation-hardening (17-4 PH, 15-5 PH). Some references add duplex (2205, 2507) as a fifth type.

Grade 309 contains 22-24% Cr and 12-15% Ni; Grade 310 contains 24-26% Cr and 19-22% Ni. The higher alloy content of 310 gives it better high-temperature oxidation resistance -- 310 is rated approximately 100 F higher in continuous service temperature than 309.

A good number for stainless steel depends on the application. Grade 304 is the universal starting point for general use; 316 for marine or chemical environments; 310 for high-temperature furnace and kiln applications; 17-4 PH for high-strength structural requirements.

The main disadvantages of 304 include lower corrosion resistance than 316 in chloride environments, potential for weld sensitization without post-weld treatment (use 304L for welds), and limited high-temperature performance above 870 C. For high-temperature service, 309 or 310 are the appropriate upgrades.

For high-temperature service, 310 is superior to 316 due to its much higher chromium and nickel content. For ambient-temperature chloride corrosion resistance, 316 is superior to 310. They serve different purposes: 310 for heat, 316 for corrosion.
