Features of Nickel 405

Chemical Composition – It is predominately 63% Nickel and anywhere from 28-34% copper. This guarantees the most amount of chemical and corrosion resistance from the nickel while also maintaining the brute hardness that comes with using a majorly copper metal. Trace elements of Carbon, Sulfur, Silicon, Iron, and Manganese. This creates a formidable blended metal that is durable as well as very machinable for the needs of your job.

Corrosion Resistance – It exhibits many of the same corrosion resistance and physical properties as Nickel 400; however, the range of mechanical properties does not completely mirror those of Nickel 400. This grade is used primarily as automatic screw machine stock where corrosion resistance and toughness are required.

405 NickelMachinability – The higher sulfur content of the 405 Allow allows for enhanced machinability, making this alloy the free machining grade of Nickel 400. Similar to Nickel 400, 405 is a high-Nickel alloy consisting of at least 63% Nickel alloyed with Copper, some Iron, and other trace elements. This material is valued by many industries for its combination of high strength and corrosion resistance over a wide range of conditions and temperatures.

Monel 405s disadvantages include high cost versus stainless steel, limited weldability (sulfur makes welds crack-prone), inability to be hardened significantly by heat treatment, and slightly reduced corrosion resistance versus Monel 400 in creviced joints. It is a specialized grade for machined non-welded components.

Both Inconel and Monel are expensive due to high nickel content, complex alloy chemistry, and sophisticated processing requirements. Inconel grades (718, 625) are typically more expensive than Monel 400 or 405 because of additional alloying elements like niobium, molybdenum, and chromium at higher levels.

All Monel alloys can be attacked by strongly oxidizing acids (nitric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid above ~80%), mercury and mercury salts, and moist chlorine gas. Monel is not the correct choice for these specific environments.
