How Custom Sourcing Works

  1. Submit your specification: Share your grade, form, dimension, quantity, and any applicable standards (ASTM, AMS, EN, etc.) via our RFQ form or by speaking directly with a product specialist.
  2. Expert review: Our team evaluates your specification and confirms whether the requirement can be met from current stock or requires a dedicated mill or distributor search, often within the same business day.
  3. Sourcing and qualification: We contact our trusted partner network, verify material traceability, and confirm compliance with your specified standard before committing to supply.
  4. Quotation and lead time: You receive a clear, itemized quote including price, lead time, and available certifications, with no hidden fees or minimum order surprises.
  5. Delivery and documentation: Material is delivered with full Mill Test Reports (MTRs) and any additional documentation your project or quality system requires.

Custom Sourcing FAQs

How long does custom sourcing typically take?

Lead times vary depending on the grade and form required. Many specialty grades can be sourced within one to four weeks; genuinely rare specifications may require longer. We confirm lead times in every quotation so you can plan accordingly.

Is there a minimum order quantity for custom-sourced materials?

Minimum quantities depend on the specific grade and form. We work hard to accommodate small-quantity requirements for prototype, maintenance, and repair applications, as well as large-volume production orders. Contact us to discuss your needs.

Will I receive material certifications with my order?

Yes. All custom-sourced material is supplied with Mill Test Reports (MTRs) as standard. Where your project requires additional documentation, such as NACE compliance, Positive Material Identification (PMI), or third-party inspection, we can arrange this as part of your order.

Can you source to proprietary or customer-specific specifications?

Absolutely. We regularly source material to ASTM, AMS, EN, BS, JIS, and ASME standards, as well as to customer-issued material specifications. Provide your documentation, and we’ll work to match it exactly.

What if I’m not certain which grade I need?

Our product specialists are happy to assist with material selection. Share your application, service environment, and any relevant design criteria, and we’ll recommend the most appropriate and cost-effective grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 304 stainless steel rust-proof?
304 stainless steel is highly resistant to rust and corrosion in most environments. While not completely rust-proof under extreme conditions (e.g., prolonged saltwater exposure), it performs excellently in general industrial and structural applications.
Can 304 stainless steel be welded?
Yes. 304 is one of the most weldable stainless steel grades. It can be welded using all standard methods including TIG, MIG, and stick welding.
What is 304 stainless steel commonly used for?
304 is used in food processing equipment, structural components, chemical containers, kitchen equipment, architectural trim, and general fabrication projects.
What's the difference between 304 and 316?
304 is a general-purpose grade offering excellent corrosion resistance at a lower cost. 316 includes molybdenum for superior resistance in marine and chemical environments. Choose 304 for most applications and 316 when exposure to harsh chemicals or saltwater is expected.
