  • EN 10204 3.1 — Mill Test Report (Standard): Issued by the manufacturer confirming material compliance with specified requirements. Provided as standard on all orders. Includes chemical composition (heat analysis), mechanical properties, heat and lot number, applicable standard conformance declaration, and the manufacturer’s authorized signatory.
  • EN 10204 3.2 — Mill Test Report (Third-Party Witnessed): As per 3.1, but countersigned by an independent inspection body or the customer’s authorized inspector. Required for the most demanding quality specifications, including pressure vessel and structural applications, where independent verification is mandatory.
  • PMI — Positive Material Identification: X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing performed on individual pieces to verify that the chemical composition matches the specified grade. Essential for preventing material mix-ups in safety-critical systems. Available for all stainless steel, titanium, and nickel alloy grades, with a per-piece PMI report provided.
  • NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Compliance: Certification of compliance for sour service (H2S) applications in oil and gas production environments. Includes applicable grade and hardness verification, and a NACE compliance declaration on the MTR. Available for duplex, super-duplex, and selected nickel alloys.
  • AMS / ASTM Certification: Documentation confirming compliance with AMS (Aerospace Material Specifications) or specific ASTM standards for titanium alloys, nickel alloys, and aerospace-grade stainless steel. Suitable for AS9100 and aerospace quality management system requirements.
  • Certificate of Conformance (CoC): A formal declaration from Stainless Shapes confirming that the material supplied conforms to the customer’s specified requirements, order details, and applicable standards. Cross-referenced to MTR and heat/lot data. Available on request for all orders, supporting ISO 9001 and QMS-controlled purchasing.

What a Mill Test Report Contains

  • Material identification: Grade designation, product form and dimensions, heat and lot number, applicable specification and standard, and quantity and weight of material supplied.
  • Mechanical properties: Tensile strength (ultimate and yield), elongation percentage, hardness value (Brinell, Rockwell, or Vickers as applicable), and Charpy impact values where required by the specification.
  • Chemical composition: All specified elemental ranges per the applicable standard, including carbon, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum content. Residual element levels are controlled by specification, and PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) for duplex grades where specified.
  • Certification data: Mill name and country of manufacture, EN 10204 inspection document type, authorized signatory declaration, and reference to applicable test standards such as ASTM A370.

    When Is PMI Testing Required?

    Positive Material Identification provides an additional layer of material verification beyond the paper trail. Using portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology, PMI confirms the elemental composition of individual pieces of material against the specified grade. Unlike an MTR, which reports the chemical analysis of the original heat, PMI verifies that the specific piece you are installing or fabricating with is actually the grade it is supposed to be.

    This protects against mislabelling, material mix-up during storage or processing, and counterfeit or substituted material entering the supply chain.

    PMI is typically specified for high-pressure piping systems and pressure vessels; offshore and subsea equipment; chemical and petrochemical plant critical lines; nuclear and power generation installations; medical device and implant-adjacent manufacturing; aerospace structural and engine components; and any project where ASME, API, or client specifications require piece-level material verification.

      Are Mill Test Reports included with every order as standard?

      Yes. Every order from Stainless Shapes is supplied with a Mill Test Report (EN 10204 3.1) as standard, at no additional charge. If you require EN 10204 3.2, PMI, or other documentation, please specify this when requesting a quote.

      What is the difference between EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2 certification?

      An EN 10204 3.1 certificate is issued and signed by the manufacturer’s authorized representative. An EN 10204 3.2 certificate is additionally countersigned by an independent inspection body or the customer’s own authorized inspector, providing a higher level of third-party verification. 3.2 is typically required where regulatory frameworks or customer quality specifications mandate independent confirmation of test results.

      Can you provide documentation to support our ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality system?

      Yes. We are experienced in supplying the documentation packages required to support ISO 9001 and AS9100 purchasing controls, including Certificates of Conformance, MTRs with full heat traceability, and PMI reports. Let us know your QMS requirements when placing your order.

      How quickly can certification documents be provided?

      MTRs are provided with every standard order. For additional documentation, such as 3.2 or PMI, requirements and lead times vary.       Is 304 stainless steel rust-proof?
