Stainless Steel Half Round Bars

Stainless Steel Half Round Supplier

We are a stainless steel 304 half-round bar supplier. Our 304 stainless steel half-round bar is cold-drawn and annealed, offered in stock lengths of 20 feet or cut to size. The 304 stainless alloy offers strength and corrosion resistance in various environments.

Half-round bars are incredibly important. It is a unique shape that has great appeal among many of the various industries that use stainless steel. A stainless steel half-round is a type of metal bar that has a semi-circular cross-section. This means that one side is flat, while the other side is rounded, resembling half of the diameter.

Stainless Steel Half Round Bar Stock – We are one of the largest stocking distributors of stainless steel Half Round. The most common stock sizes are ½”, 5/8”, and ¾”. Custom sizes are available for mill orders. The minimum for a customer half round is 2,000#. By providing superior material that can meet your demands and specifications. How can we make you another satisfied customer?

Half Round Bar Finishes

Annealed Cold Drawn – This is a thermal treatment used to soften the material being drawn and modify the microstructure, mechanical properties, and the machining characteristics of the steel, and to remove internal stresses in the product. Depending on the desired characteristics of the finished product, annealing may be used before, during (between passes), or after the cold drawing operation, depending on material requirements. Cold drawing the material applies a better finish with tighter tolerances.

Cold Finish – The cold finish is an extended version of the cold-drawn version. While cold drawn is an extension of the hot rolled process. The cold finish allows us to take the extra time to line the steel in a singular direction.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Stainless steel half round bars are used in applications that require a flat bottom surface and a rounded top, such as handrail insert strips, decorative trim, edge guards, wear strips on conveyor systems, step nosings, and knife spines in food processing equipment. Their unique profile makes them especially useful in architectural and food-service environments.

In terms of tensile strength, 304 and 316 are similar—both are austenitic grades with yield strengths around 25–30 ksi annealed. The real difference is corrosion performance: 316 is significantly more resistant to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion due to its molybdenum content, making it the stronger performer in corrosive environments, while 304 is adequate for most indoor and dry atmospheric applications.

Both 304 and 316 are austenitic stainless steels with similar mechanical properties, but 316 adds 2–3% molybdenum, which dramatically improves resistance to chloride and salt-water corrosion. 316 also contains slightly more nickel. As a result, 316 half round bars are preferred for marine, coastal, chemical, and food-processing environments, while 304 is the standard choice for general-purpose and indoor applications.

Stainless Shapes stocks 304 and 316 half round stainless steel bars in standard and custom dimensions. Standard diameters range from small fractions of an inch up to several inches across the flat face. Contact Stainless Shapes directly at 800-748-9811 or via their quote request form to confirm current inventory sizes and availability.

Yes, stainless steel half round bars can be welded using TIG or MIG processes with the appropriate filler metal—ER308L for 304 and ER316L for 316. As with any stainless welding, good back-gas shielding and post-weld passivation will preserve corrosion resistance.

316 stainless steel is an austenitic alloy, so in its annealed state it is generally non-magnetic—a magnet will have little to no attraction. However, some light magnetic response may develop in areas that have been cold-worked or machined. This is normal and does not indicate a different alloy.

For maximum strength in half round bar form, precipitation-hardening grades like 17-4 PH can be produced in half round profiles and offer tensile strengths far above standard 304 or 316. Among the standard austenitic grades stocked by Stainless Shapes, 316 and 304 are comparable in strength, with 316 preferred in aggressive environments.

316 stainless steel is generally more expensive than 304 due to its higher molybdenum and nickel content. The price premium for 316 half round bars over 304 varies with market conditions but is typically 20–40% higher. Stainless Shapes offers competitive pricing on both grades—request a quote for current pricing.

Half round stainless steel bars are used across food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical equipment, marine hardware, architectural and decorative trim, conveyor systems, and chemical processing. Any application requiring a hygienic, corrosion-resistant strip with a smooth rounded profile is a natural fit.
